Volkswagen’s seven-passenger SUV boasts the Government’s highest safety rating

  • Volkswagen 5-Star models include: 2017 Beetle, 2018 Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf GTI, Golf R, Golf SportWagen, Jetta, Jetta GLI and Passat
  • When equipped with Front Assist, Atlas also named a 2017 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
  • Available driver assist features include: Front Assist, ACC, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Assist, ParkPilot, Park Assist, Light Assist and Area View

Herndon, VA (September 15, 2017) – Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that the all-new, seven-passenger 2018 Atlas has earned a 5-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which runs the government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), and has provided consumers with vehicle safety information since 1978.

The 2018 Atlas joins the Golf family as well as the Jetta, Jetta GLI and Passat as 2018 Volkswagen models that have an overall 5-Star Rating. The 2017 Beetle Coupe also received a 5-Star Rating.

NHTSA’s NCAP provides front, side, and rollover crash test ratings, all aimed at helping consumers in making their vehicle purchasing decisions. The rating results are relayed to consumers using an easily recognizable star rating system from one to five, with five being the best a vehicle can achieve. For details, visit www.safercar.gov.

“The Volkswagen Atlas is designed for the modern American family,” said Hendrik Muth, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategy. “There’s nothing more important than keeping your family safe and the Atlas is engineered to help do that with excellent structural integrity and numerous available safety and driver assistance features.”

Like the rest of the Volkswagen lineup, Atlas provides an assortment of both passive and active safety systems. It has been engineered to meet or exceed all current safety regulations and features six airbags (driver, passenger, driver and passenger side, and full-length curtain) as standard along with a number of electronic safety systems. In addition to these safety features, the vehicle has the latest version of Volkswagen’s 4Motion® all-wheel-drive system as an available feature to help optimize traction and provide greater stability.

Atlas is the only vehicle in its class to offer the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which is standard on all models. This system builds on the premise that a collision is rarely a single, instantaneous action, but rather a series of events that follow the initial impact—the most significant of which can cause additional collisions. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System addresses this by applying the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus helping reduce residual kinetic energy and, in turn, the chance of additional damage.

Driver assistance systems available on the Atlas include: Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist), front and rear Park Distance Control with Maneuver Braking (ParkPilot), Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist), High Beam Control (Light Assist) and Overhead View Camera (Area View).
